Jagged Alliance 3: Grand Chien, a nation of rich natural resources and deep political divides, is thrown into chaos when the elected president goes missing and a paramilitary force known as “The Legion” seizes control of the countryside. Now, the President’s family has pulled together all their resources, including an arrangement with the authoritative Adonis corporation, to hire a group of skilled mercenaries tasked with finding the Leader and bringing order back to the country. In Jagged Alliance 3, select from a huge cast of mercenaries all with their unique characters, quirks, and backstories. Then go out and explore Grand Chien as you meet new people, earn money, grow your team, and ultimately make your own decisions that will decide the country’s fate.
After Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire in 2004, the series went quiet for several years. Though perfectly placed for an XCOM-style revival, more recent follow-ups Jagged Alliance Online, Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, Jagged Alliance Remembrance, and Jagged Alliance: Rage! have all been poorly received. Now the series is in the hands of Haemimont Games, the Bulgarian studio answerable for Tropico 3, 4, and 5 as well as Surviving Mars and Victor Vran. Haemimont will apparently “finally create a true successor to the favorite series”. Dare we get our hopes up?
ABOUT THIS GAME:
According to the press release, “Jagged Alliance 3 will combine tactically deep, turn-based combat with an exploration of a large game world with strategic elements with gaining control over territories, training local forces, and founding multiple squads chosen from favorite mercenaries – all well known to fans of the series.” Sounds good so far, as does a mention of “looting and customizing your arsenal of weaponry”, which was part of the appeal of the originals. It’ll have co-op multiplayer too.
The gameplay seems like a mix of the slick modernity of Firaxis XCOM with Jagged Alliance detail—characters spending action points and targeting individual body parts. Fidel uses a “signature ability” that lets him toss two grenades at once, which seems pretty in character, and the catalog of mercs includes more old hands like Tex, Igor, Wolf, Hitman, Red, Steroid, MD, and Buns. I’ve still got questions about which topographies of the earlier games will be current. Can you mix your Molotov cocktails? Can you use bullets to open doors if you can’t be bothered picking the lock? They’re not all essential, but they’d be nice. I want to believe the series can be great again, but I’ve been burned before.
